Since this one was not absolute, I don't think so. It was based completely on assumptions, thus for reality, it remains a valid question.

I will offer you a link to my homepage where you can download a program that calculates the "required diamonds" from bdcff-files ;-) Soon, the program will support different file formats.

Ok I try it. If you don't understand everything (because in my opinion my English is terrible), don't hesitate to ask.

Rockford has collected eight diamonds. One diamond has a value that is less than the others. But the appearance of all diamonds is equal. Rockford has to find out which diamond's value is less, because he wants to know if he is really richer than Bill G.. All diamonds have the same weight. Only the cheaper diamond is lighter. Fortunately Rockford has got a balance. The balance has no scale, you can only compare the weight of different objects. Rockford can put as many diamonds as he wants on both sides of the balance, but he only wants to weight twice.
Can he find out, which diamond is cheaper?

Good luck.

Yes :D

Put three Diamonds on each side of the scale:
- if they weigh the same, then one of the two remaining Diamonds is lighter and they can be weighed against each other.
or....
- if one side is lighter, then one of the three Diamonds is the lighter one, weigh two of the Diamonds against each other to see if one is lighter, if they weigh the same then it is the Diamond that wasn't weighed.

My turn I suppose :?

In BD01 L5 I4 (a puzzle in itself?), what is the minimum amount of steps Rockford needs to take to complete it and enter the Exit?

I'm a bit confused here. Do you mean Boulder Dash 1, cave L of level 5 and cave I of level 4?

I suspected it might have been a bit cryptic but thought what the heck

I mean Boulder Dash 01, Level 5, Intermission 4.

That's a different answer to what I have.

After my attempt at Arno's Puzzle I'm concerned I'm wrong but I've checked it several times.

If you want to list your steps eg: 6 down, 7 right etc... I will stand corrected.

(Self-doubt is a bugger :()

I tested it with my own game engine (not released) and boulder remake.
Both worked.

Code: Select all

6x down, 5x right
dig up
1x right (be quick)
dig left (push boulder)
2x right
dig right (push boulder)
1x left, 1x up, 2x left, 1x down, 2x right,
dig right (push boulder)
2x left, 1x up, 2x left, 1x down, 4x right,
Now it's easy...

Code: Select all

4x up, 4x right, 2x down, 1x left,
dig left (pick up diamond)
1x down, 3x left, 1x down, 1x left, 1x down

Well done subotai  :worshippy:

I stand corrected, 49 steps is the minimum. I missed that sneaky "Dig Up" move you did ;)

I suppose it goes to show why the Newbies should stay out of the Quiz and Puzzle threads

Thanks :D

Ok, here's the next question.
What's the maximum number of diamonds that Rockford can collect in this intermission. All butterflies move up. There are only steelwalls. You can't destroy a wall and a rock or a diamond will not fall off the wall!

I hope this is not too easy for you. But I guess it will not be too difficult to solve.

Good luck! :)

Here are my first thoughts about it:

You can get at most eight diamonds from each butterfly if you hit it at the right point. If the rocks were farer away from each other, the solution would indeed be 40. That there's no room between the rocks gives new complications. I think I see a way to get 3*8+2*7= 38 diamonds, I'm not sure if 39 is also possible, but don't think so.
My "justified guess" is therefore: 38 diamonds.
