The Great Colour Question: Do you like non-black backgrounds

I like to use them here and there, but I avoid them if I want the caves to have a 'classic' feel. I also find it works best with dark colours - brown, grey, red, etc...

I picked no, because I think it's ugly. I like to pretend that colors 1 and 2 don't exist...that takes care of all my problems  .

I used to do that religiously, too. But I decided to experiment with it in one of my games. I just made sure the colours didn't clash or were too bright.

Here's one of them:

This level was inspired by Arno, by the way :)

Well...the BG's not too bad, but I'm not a big fan of the border color - It just kind of ruins that "darkness at the end of the screen" feeling. :)

[Edit] Now that I look at it more, it kind of makes the cave look like it's underwater! :goldfish:

You have a point with the border thingy, actually... Maybe I'll try putting the borders back to black.

Yeah it does look underwater 8) . In the Crazy Light CK there is a bubble element so you can actually make really underwater-looking levels :)

The colouring misses that black bit inbetween the stats and the playfield. That's another reason to take it out I guess.

Try making the border blue, just like the BG. I might look really good! Too bad I can't edit my vote now...

I picked 'No', because most of the times I find it ugly, and it may disturb the character of the cave set by the usual 3 colours.

Also in my own games I hardly use any background/border other than black. Only for Santa's Boulder Dash Party I've used a few blue background colors to get an impression of daylight.

Bordercolors I would never use unless it's black or the same as the bg color.

[Edit] The underwater-look is a nice idea. Or even better when combined with the Atlantis graphics set, or the new underwater-graphics set that I'm still planning to release some day....

I voted 'no' because I don't like non-black background colors in BD at all. One exception may be a kind of underwater look, but then I'd prefer a black border and just a dark blue background.

I voted 'no' - the black background lets you concentrate on the important things that aren't black. Also, traditionally Arcade games had black backgrounds (Space Invaders, Pacman)... but now i'm showing my age :)

I voted 'no' too, I really prefer the black backgrounds too...
