I was trying the BDCFF --> MAPS Converter, (which is, by the way, a great tool !),
but it seems to me that the 'FormatPicsInHTML'-option is not working. It doesn't
matter if I set this option to 'gif' or 'png', the images are always in 'bmp' (?).

Is this a known bug, perhaps ?

This setting works only on filenames (/extentions) that are written in the html.
The conversion itself is not done by this tool. You have to do this with another program (for instance IrfanView).
